Gonorrhoea

Type of infection

Bacterial (can affect the genitals, throat or backside)

Symptoms

  • Can be very similar to Chlamydia

  • Thick green or yellow discharge from your genitals or backside

  • Pain when peeing

  • Painful swollen balls

  • Bleeding during or after sex

  • Pelvic and lower abdominal pain

  • Can be passed from mother to new born baby

  • Can cause Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) and  infertility in women if left untreated

  • There may be no symptoms at all.

Cause

  • Sharing sex toys without using a condom each time or washing them between partners

  • Unprotected sex, be it vaginal, anal or oral, with an infected person

  • Between mother and baby

  • Remember…..they may not know that they have it because they haven’t had any symptoms.

Treatment

Antibiotics, normally in a single dose.

If the infection has not cleared up then you may have to go back on antibiotics until it cleared.

Once you’ve had Gonorrhoea, you can get it again.

Remember…..no having sex for at least 7 days after your treatment, it’s to ensure the infection is well and truly cleared.
