Genital Warts

Type of infection

Viral infection (Human Papilloma Virus or HPV for short) which

shows up as small fleshy ‘cauliflower’ bumps on or around the

genitals.

Symptoms

  • Itching and/or bleeding on or around the genitals or asshole

  • A single or number of small fleshy ‘cauliflower’ lumps or growths on or around the genitals or asshole

Cause

  • Sharing sex toys without using a condom each time or washing them between partners

  • Unprotected sex, be it vaginal, anal or oral, with an infected person

  • Skin to skin contact

  • Remember…..they may not know that they have it because they haven’t had any symptoms.

Treatment

If you get an outbreak of warts then the clinic may suggest a treatment that is either a cream, lotion or chemical to apply over a period of time or getting them frozen, burn them off or remove them.

Treatment may take several months.

There is a vaccine for teenage girls that protects against cervical cancer that is caused by HPV. Women over the age of 18 are not able to get the vaccine.

Remember…..use a condom to help reduce the chance of getting or passing on the virus, however, if the virus is on or around the asshole or vagina then it may still be passed onto someone else.
